Edwin Poots, the Environment Minister for Northern Ireland, has announced that the country’s recycling and waste management infrastructure is to benefit from a new, £5 million source of funding from the Department for the Environment (DOE). Yesterday (September 6th), the plastics recycling body Recoup announced some exciting news for the waste management industry – the recycling rate for plastic bottles in the UK has hit 45 per cent. A recycling scheme plagued by problems and complaints from the outset has been officially launched today in Torbay, Devon. Due to its rising profile in the UK, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has reportedly held a meeting to discuss the merits and drawbacks of the Recycle Bank scheme, an incentive-based initiative originating from the US. The residents of the Edinburgh suburb of Pilton have complained of an increase in flytipping in the region after the council scrapped a free special uplift service last April. It is also claimed that this has caused a series of dangerous blazes as dumped rubbish poses a fire hazard. Residents in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, are to benefit from new and improved recycling and waste management services as the council invests in new waste collection vehicles. According to the latest figures, the number of portable waste batteries recycled in the UK has risen dramatically in the last few months. Data published by the Environment Agency (EA) shows that the recycling rate jumped from 9.15 per cent in the first part of 2010 to 16.15 per cent in the second quarter of the year. The recycling and waste management industry in Wales is to receive more than £3 million in funding from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), who have pledged to help the country reach its ambitious recycling targets. Enfield Council has this week granted planning permission for renewable energy company Kedco to build a new biomass-gasification recycling facility in Edmonton, North London. A new research study published by environmental services firm SRI Consulting has been labelled both “dangerous for sustainability” and “unwise” by EuPR, a leading plastics recycling trade organisation.
