Residents in the Scottish town of Invergordon have set up their own recycling company as part of a campaign to block an incinerator being built in the area.
The protest group, called ‘Invergordon Incinerator No To Waste’, has been campaigning against plans by Combined Power and Heat (Highlands) to build a £43 million waste incinerator in Invergordon. The plans were originally rejected by Highland Council, but an appeal is now reportedly being considered.
The campaigners, whilst not relaxing their protests against the proposed incinerator, are now looking for new ways to deal with waste management in their area. They have set up a new community company called Invergordon Community Action for Recycling and the Environment (Icare), in which a group of committed people will turn the company into a development trust.
Once they have found a suitable premises, the company will investigate ways to collect waste from households and businesses in the area, as well as ways to cut waste.
Director at Icare, Tina McCaffery, said:
“The reporter in his recommendation stated the community needed to ‘behave in a manner which will reduce, reuse and recycle’. We are doing this to prove Invergordon does not need an incinerator.”
