Caroline Spelman to get rid of eyesore wheelie bins on streets

  • Posted On: 29/07/2010 13:39:24

Green Party leader Caroline Spelman has this week announced plans to cut down on the number of wheelie bins cluttering up Britain’s streets and pavements, which campaigners have called an ‘eyesore’.

It is believed that some UK households have up to nine wheelie bins on their properties, with most people having at least three– one for general waste collection, one for recycling and one for food and garden waste. The government wants to cut back on these unsightly bins, to make the waste management system more efficient and narrow streets and pavements less cluttered.

A departmental source has said:

“Local authorities should have to explain why it is important to have so many different types of bins.

“Where there is a problem, we will look at how this has come about. It will be where there are loads of them, say you have two or three and they are big and bulky. It is not practical.”

These plans are part of the government’s nationwide waste review, which will also focus on reducing the amount of packaging that comes with toys, household appliances and electrical devices such as televisions and computers.
