ZSL - Waste Management and Recycling Case StudiesThe Problem

London Zoo and Whipsnade Wild Animal Park are two organisations that faced a similar and rather literal ‘waste’ problem. The herbivores of London Zoo including giraffes, bongos, camels and llamas produce over 520 tonnes of ‘zoo poo’ every year and with such high visitor numbers it was imperative that a solution was found to help store it efficiently and hygienically combating odours, spillages and the attraction of vermin.

The Solution

ACM took on the challenge and delivered a highly original and innovative solution. Not only did they provide portable, lockable and leak proof compactors, they custom painted them to reflect some of the actual animals.

The compaction equipment for London Zoo was painted with a giraffe effect and Whipsnade got the zebra treatment.

As well as arranging the composting of the ‘zoo poo’ ACM also helped both organisations in their recycling efforts by supplying vertical mill size balers to compact cardboard.

Client Comments

“Both organisations are dedicated to the conservation of animals and their habitats, both of which are being affected by the negative impact of global climate change, so it is essential that their own environmental performance is good.”
