Ways to help protect our environment every day...

•  Think about how far the food you buy has travelled. Choose an option that has been produced in the UK . Why? Because the average Kiwi Fruit creates five times its own weight in greenhouse gasses just getting to our supermarket shelves!

•  Recycle all your waste paper so that it can be used again instead of it being thrown away and sticking around, damaging our environment probably in a landfill site for thousands and thousands of years. To provide all of the paper we use in the UK every year we need a forest the size of Wales .

•  Calculate your carbon footprint and then work out ways to reduce it. You can find all the information you need at www.climatecare.org

•  Use a biro until it is finished. Did you know that a biro in landfill will still be there in 50,000 years!

•  Unplug your mobile phone charger as soon as your battery is fully charged! 95% of the energy used by mobile phone chargers is wasted – they are only actually charging your phone for 5% of the time that they are plugged in.

•  Recycle your mobile phones and printer cartridges. All the printer cartridges and mobile phones recycled through ACM Waste Management Plc go to help ZSL (Zoological Society of London) raise funds for its vital work in protecting habitat and biodiversity.

•  Always shut down your computer and other electrical appliances when you are not using them. One computer left on all day results in the emission of 1500 pounds of carbon dioxide and it takes between 100 and 500 trees to absorb that amount of extra CO2 from the atmosphere.

•  Photocopy of both sides of a sheet of paper to reduce the amount of waste paper created n the UK , which is enough to fill 103,488 double-decker buses.

•  Make sure your business turns all its lights off every night; this will not only save energy it will also reduce the average company's energy bills by 19% every year!

•  Reduce the waste you produce, for example using one less staple every day would save 120 tonnes pf steel every year.

•  Collect fewer air miles. Flying from London to Edinburgh generates 193kg of CO2, eight times the CO2 produced by making the same journey by train. Moreover the emissions from air travel are released at an altitude where their damage to the planet is greater and their effect on climate change is more than double than that on the ground.
