ACM and Leon House Going for Gold

June 2008

ACM and Leon House Going for GoldACM Waste Management Plc has helped Leon House, one of the Lambert Smith Hampton portfolio of properties, to win a silver award for environmental excellence and now the two companies are working together to up the standard even further and go for gold!

Leon House, a high rise office building in Croydon South London, has won a Silver Envibe Award in recognition of its commitment to improving its environmental performance and the waste management solution provided by ACM has played a major part.

ACM initially supplied Leon House with a waste compactor, a baler for cardboard and polythene and installed a recycling system for cans and plastic bottles, but now the partnership has developed even further and waste Management Consultant, Lezlee Burke, has prepared a detailed sustainable waste management policy for Leon House and helped them to win the Silver Envibe Award.

Lezlee said: “Envibe is an initiative for businesses in the Croydon area that want to improve their environmental performance so it is a fantastic achievement for Leon House to win silver.

“I’m delighted that the Sustainable Waste Management Policy made a positive contribution and I’m already looking for ways to work even more closely with Leon House to help them improve even further and maybe even achieve gold standard.”

The sustainable waste management policy sets out a framework to advance the sustainable use of resources and help Leon House demonstrate to the community that the waste management decisions of employees can enhance environmental quality and be resource responsible by:

- Preventing the production of waste where possible
- Minimising waste
- Reusing materials where possible
- Recycling materials
- Reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill

It also gives detailed definitions and goals, sets objectives and responsibilities and clearly outlines Leon House’s commitment to environmental excellence.

Hugh Meehan, Site Facilities Manager at Leon House said: “Leon House is a prominent feature of Croydon High Street and with hundreds of people working here we recognised that we had a fantastic opportunity to educate them about the importance of good environmental performance at the same time as improving our own.”

Charlotte Thirlway, Property Surveyor added: “We have an excellent working relationship with ACM, which is a real partnership and I’m looking forward to continuing our work together and hopefully to winning some more awards. In 2007 we baled just seven tonnes of card and we now have plans to set up a separate recycling area for all our tenants.”

Lezlee concluded: “I live in Croydon so it is fantastic for me personally to see such commitment to the environment from a business that is right on my own doorstep.”
