Top Tips to Help You Achieve Complete Waste Management December 2008 Top Tips to Help Your Company Achieve Complete Waste Management Do you feel as though you're continually sifting through waste products in your office or commercial premises? Papers, plastic and old electrical items may seem as though they're continually building up around you. It doesn't have to be this way though as you can reduce the amount of rubbish produced in your workplace with some complete waste management tips. Reducing your waste in the workplace will also help your green credentials and create a more environmentally friendly image for your company. Complete waste management of paper Unwanted mail and leaflets through your company letter box can soon pile up on your desk. Instead of recycling them or binning them, stop the mail before it's even posted to you. Register with the Mailing Preference Service which allows you to be selective about what you receive through your letter box and can put a stop to junk mail. If you receive post which isn't addressed to your company or it is addressed to someone who's left the company, instead of binning it (which will only lead to companies continuing to send you post) write ‘return to sender' on the envelope and send it back. When you sign up for business services, either online or offline, make sure you tick the correct box to indicate you don't want to receive promotions and advertising through the post. Encourage employees not to print unnecessary emails or circulate documents which would be just as effective in email format. Complete waste management of electrical items Most people are familiar with the phrase ‘they don't make them like they used to' and this could be one of the reasons you have broken or unused electrical items gathering in your office. Complete waste management can be achieved with electrical items by simply buying quality products and encouraging staff to look after them. If you do have a broken item make sure you dispose of it correctly by taking it to your local recycling depot rather than throwing it in the bin. Next time you upgrade a PC monitor or coffee machine at work and the old one is in good working order ask around your employees to see if they can give it a good home. Complete waste management of packaging Most items on sale come in packaging of some sort whether it's tin, plastic or paper. Most companies seem to think that packaging a product makes it neat and complete. Waste management can help to conquer excessive packaging by helping to reduce the need companies have to wrap and pack items. If you receive regular deliveries from the same suppliers then ask them to reduce their packaging for your company. Stationary items for example are often individually wrapped and then boxed up separately. If your supplier can cut down on the amount of packaging they use then they can help you achieve complete waste management. Buy items for the staff room and staff kitchen in bulk to save on packaging (and on cost). Buying large tins of coffee and 6 pint milk cartons and encouraging staff to reuse plastic cups will help to manage the waste produced from packaging. |
