Any waste that can’t be reused, recycled or avoided in the first place (i.e. reduced) can be used to make heat and power using incineration, anaerobic digestion or other techniques. By ‘recovering’ the energy left in our rubbish we extract maximum value whilst avoiding landfill.
Anaerobic digestion is particularly suitable for waste streams such as food waste, with the product being collected, taken to an AD plant where it is processed, biogas is captured to create renewable energy and the remainder forms a fertiliser.
